The historic core is dense with listed buildings and sits almost entirely within conservation areas. That changes what is actually possible with a boiler. Flue terminals on a street-facing elevation, new external gas runs and condensate discharge all have to be planned around what is permitted, not just what is convenient. We work the flue route out before quoting, so you find out at the survey rather than on installation day.
Move out from the centre and the stock changes again. The Victorian and Edwardian terraces around Stanmore and Highcliffe often still carry the scars of a removed back boiler, with pipework routed around a chimney breast and a kitchen too small to take a boiler comfortably. The 1930s semis and the newer housing on the northern edge of the city are far more straightforward, and the modern, well-insulated ones are genuine candidates for a heat pump.
Winchester sits on chalk, and the mains water is hard. Scale is the single most common reason combi boilers fail early here - it builds up in the plate heat exchanger, hot water temperature starts swinging, and eventually the exchanger blocks. We fit scale reduction on new installations as a matter of course and would recommend it on any combi in the city.

Usually yes, but the flue position is where it gets complicated. Terminals on a street-facing or otherwise prominent elevation can need listed building consent, and there are minimum clearances from windows, doors and boundaries to respect. We work out the flue route at survey stage and will tell you honestly if consent is likely to be needed.
It shortens their life. The chalk aquifer that supplies the city gives genuinely hard water, and scale accumulates in combi plate heat exchangers. The usual symptom is hot water that runs hot then cold at the tap. Scale reduction fitted at the same time as a new boiler is far cheaper than replacing an exchanger later.
